Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: A Step towards a Cleaner India

Introduction

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, also known as the Clean India Mission, is a national campaign launched in India on 2nd October 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The mission aims to achieve a clean and open defecation-free (ODF) India by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The campaign focuses on eliminating open defecation, promoting solid waste management, and changing sanitation and hygiene practices in India.

Importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Sanitation is a fundamental human right, and its absence has severe consequences for individuals and communities. Poor sanitation is a major cause of preventable diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. According to UNICEF, India accounts for 60% of the world's open defecation, which leads to approximately 190,000 diarrheal deaths annually, primarily among children under five.

Key Objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

  • Eradication of open defecation: The mission aims to construct toilets in every household, school, and public place in India.
  • Scientific solid waste management: The campaign promotes the proper collection, segregation, transportation, processing, and disposal of solid waste.
  • Elimination of manual scavenging: The practice of manually cleaning human waste has been a severe human rights violation in India. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seeks to eliminate this practice by providing alternative employment opportunities to manual scavengers.
  • Changing sanitation and hygiene practices: The campaign emphasizes the importance of personal hygiene, including handwashing with soap, proper disposal of menstrual waste, and safe food handling practices.

Strategies for Achieving Swachh Bharat

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan employs various strategies to achieve its objectives:

1. Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS):
This strategy encourages communities to take ownership of sanitation issues and devise their own solutions to eliminate open defecation.
